Change Communications: Celebrating Business Results

Posted by on Thursday, October 15, 2015 - with no comments

Being in Calgary this week to present two workshops at the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) CanWest Conference is an absolute treat. First, we are hosting an action-packed Strategy Lab, leading 30 communicators from across Canada in using our Results Map process to develop communication strategies for their organizations in real time. This will be followed by our session on the Top 10 Questions in Strategic Communications.

The cherry on top is that at the Conference, Ingenium has been recognized with the national Award of Excellence in Change Communications by IABC for work we delivered in partnership with our client, the Facilities team of the University of Ottawa.

Working with uO’s Facilities team has been a true honour and privilege – this team of 174 employees actually make the university run, providing the mission critical functions required to operate the campus’ 90 buildings, serving what amounts to a small city of 43,000 students and staff. They are architects, plumbers, electricians, maintenance workers and project managers who invest a ton of energy, expertise and heart to making the University’s important teaching and research work possible.

Ingenium collaborated with the University’s Facilities team in providing change communications support to a major business transformation initiative, spearheaded by the Facilities’ passionate and visionary Executive Director, Claudio Brun del Re. The transformation had two goals: increase client satisfaction and deliver maximum value to the university. In essence, the team was challenged to do more with less, and achieve these business targets through organizational performance.

Working with our extraordinary creative partners, Alphabet Creative and Graham Law Photo + Video, Ingenium developed a change communications program called We Power Ideas. The engagement program showcased the important work of the Facilities team, and connected employees’ day-to-day work to the higher purpose of the University in advancing teaching and research. From “graffiti-style” posters plastered all around the offices to “We Power Ideas” caps and videos, the goal was to activate staff engagement to help fuel business results.

The Facilities transformation has been a resounding success, generating dazzling business results, including achieving a $2.3 million increase in productivity as well as significant quantitative improvements in staff engagement, client satisfaction and business performance.

The real prize for us is having had the opportunity to work with such a remarkable team, and to share in the satisfaction that comes from helping to make a difference.
